How to Write the Perfect Cover Letter Closing

Your cover letter serves as your initial introduction and sets the stage for the rest of your job application materials. The perfect cover letter includes a strong closing paragraph to summarize the letter and encourage the recruiter to continue on to your resume.

1. Apply Your Research to the Whole Letter

Before you start writing your cover letter, you should research the company. You can find a lot of vital information from social media, LinkedIn, and the company's official site. Use this knowledge to tailor your whole letter, including the closing, to the company's needs, values, and goals.

2. Be Enthusiastic

One important key to a perfect cover letter is enthusiasm. Express how excited you are to be considered for the job and your desire to help the company meet its goals. Keep your closing paragraph positive and work in a final mention to the company if you can.

3. Thank the Recruiter

It's important to be polite and thank the recruiter for taking the time to read your letter and consider you for the position. Keep this sentence short and simple so it doesn't feel manipulative.

4. Gently Express Interest in the Next Step

The recruiter knows you want to be called in for an interview so you don't need to state it outright. At the most, use a polite closing such as, "I hope to hear from you soon."

5. Customize to the Company

Remember that you are writing a letter to a specific person at a unique company, so it's not the time to be generic. If you can, make a final reference in the closing to the specific ways you could meet the company's needs.

Double check that your cover letter includes your complete phone number and a professional email address.

Proofreading is essential for a good cover letter closing. It's best to use a combination of methods such as an automatic spell checker and reading aloud to catch misused words and punctuation mistakes.

There are some additional elements you can add to create a perfect cover letter that stands out from the rest of the competition. Take the time to ensure your closing paragraph is enthusiastic and confident about your qualifications. It's important to make sure you don't come across as desperate, overly confident, or pushy. Avoid pressuring phrases such as, "Call me to schedule an interview," or, "I will follow up with you next week." Instead, use concise, specific language to summarize how your unique skills fit with the company. Remember to remain professional and courteous through your closing: The cover letter is not the place to attempt humor or flattery.
