1. An important part of your job involves analyzing a company's human resources data to find trends and coming up with solutions to prevent injuries to employees. How are you prepared for this task?
I have very strong analysis skills and have taken a few courses relating to the field as well. Additionally, I'm detailed in my work and make sure I take the time to see how all the small details fit into the big picture. I also make sure to learn about the health and safety standards that are currently in place and come up with suggestions to make them more effective. I also think it's important to talk to the people involved and not just rely on the written details about the incidents. When I design solutions, I do my best to clearly explain them and make them practical to implement.
2. As a consultant, you'll be working with different organizations and situations. How will you create customized solutions for each circumstance?
I consider each task important and take the time to thoroughly research the company, employee safety standards, and trends in the historical data. I feel it's not enough to simply implement generic safety standards; it's important to create solutions that are designed to specifically fill gaps in a company's safety policy. My method would involve solutions especially designed to counteract areas of risk and prevent future incidents.
3. Many areas involve technical knowledge related to engineering and risk management. What are your qualifications in this area?
My degree in risk management included many courses on safety and a few case-study projects. I'm also very familiar with OSHA standards and ANSI codes. I feel it's important to be knowledgeable about local codes and regulations as well, and I'm familiar with the research process and know where to look to find answers.
4. You'll be required to identify problems in a company's safety policy and suggest improvement. How do you plan to remain professional and diplomatic?
Tact is important when identifying flaws and suggesting improvements. I feel it's important to be kind and understanding while also remaining firm about what new policies need to be implemented. My goal is more than simply identifying the areas that need improvement. I am passionate about creating and implementing solutions that will truly make a difference and prevent further issues in the future.
5. How do you plan to remain up-to-date on the latest regulations and other important industry news?
I subscribe to several trade publications and spend a good amount of time researching the safety industry. I'm also a member of two national safety organizations and keep up with their newsletters. I also took the extra step of becoming a Certified Safety Professional. Part of the process involved an extensive amount of research into safety regulations and how to implement them in practical ways. I also feel it's my professional responsibility to keep up with current news, so I make that research a priority.
6. What are your long-term goals in this industry? Do you plan on continuing as a consultant?
I like consulting work as I feel it remains continually challenging and interesting. I'd like to spend some time training new consultants, and perhaps create a professional mentorship program. I also plan to continue serving on at least one national safety board.
