Dear Dreamtastic Designs,

To say I was excited to come across your job posting would be an understatement. I have long wanted to work for a major design firm that was not afraid to break the mold and create trends instead of following them. That is what I’m all about, and that is why I think I would be a great addition to your team.

With a BA in Graphic Design from New School and a portfolio that spans eight years and 30 different clients, I have a good grasp on all the latest trends and tricks of the graphic design world. Moreover, I pride myself on staying on the cutting edge of new techniques and aesthetics. I recently designed an ad campaign for a small online fashion boutique that won me the Wilson’s Design Innovation Award.

I am an expert at all things Adobe and recently completed a photo and video editing course to take my editing skills to the next level. I believe continued training and growth is important for any graphic designer, no matter their years of experience.

I can’t wait to meld my creativity and unique style with that of the exceptional design team at Dreamtastic, so I look forward to the chance to discuss this opportunity further in person. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my application.

What to Include in a Designer Cover Letter

Open your cover letter with a unique and personalized introduction like the one in the above free designer cover letter sample. Then, spend two paragraphs explaining with specific examples just why you are the perfect choice for the job. Summarize it all in your conclusion, making sure to thank the reader for his or her time. The total letter should be no more than one page long, so be concise and only include the most relevant examples. Address the contact person or company directly and reference the company throughout.

Industry Specific Skills to Include

You want your cover letter to be as relevant as possible to the job you are applying for. As in the free designer cover letter sample, you can do this by including industry specific skills that you possess. Here are a few examples:

• Design software: List specific programs that you are familiar working with.
• Adaptability: You need to show that you can adapt your style to match that desired by the client or the design studio.
• Creativity: This is perhaps the most important skill a designer can have and is at the heart of the job.
• Staying current: Trends and technologies change quickly in the design world, so you have to always stay on top of what’s going on the industry.
