Dear Mr. Jordan,
I am interested in the mail sorter job that you posted. My experience working closely and courteously with customers as a restaurant host, and my background in unloading and organizing stock for a department store prove that I will not only perform well at the post office, but excel.
For three years, I worked at my local Italian restaurant, and my sole job was to ensure that our customers felt welcome and comfortable. I had to keep a vigilant eye on what tables were available, welcome customers, and discern which table they would like best. If a customer had a problem with the food or with their server, I calmly and patiently heard them out and did everything in my power to make their experience enjoyable again. I know that these skills will transfer directly to the post office, since I would have to get signatures from many post office visitors and sell stamps and other postal products.
I spent the two years after I moved unloading trucks and keeping the stock room of a department store organized. I and one other person unloaded large boxes that contained many small parcels marked with an elaborate code that we had to quickly decipher to determine what went where. Doing this daily gave me a powerful ability to quickly discern information, catch errors, and use patterns to move quickly – all traits that set me far above an automated sorting machine.
I know that my abilities to both work with customers and quickly and accurately process information qualify me for this position as a mail sorter. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I would love to talk more about the position in an interview.
