Education

What’s Needed:

  • In order to practice as an independent clinical psychologist you must have completed a PhD in clinical psychology and you must hold a license for the state or states in which you would like to work.
  • Those who hold a master’s degree in clinical psychology may be able to complete basic counseling and diagnostic duties but cannot work for themselves and must work under a licensed clinical psychologist.
  • All students complete clinical externships and internships in order to hone their skills with clients.

What courses you’ll take

Below are examples of courses that you’ll likely take as a clinical psychologist student.

Course Studies Purpose
Introduction to Psychology History of psychology as a discipline; major subfields and areas of research in modern psychology including behavior personality learning and memory stress and health thinking intelligence language mental development social psychology and counseling psychology (?therapy?). Provide a broad overview of the psychology field and its applications.
Biopsychology and Cognitive Psychology Structure and function of the brain and nervous system and of neurons (nerve cells); neural basis of processes like consciousness sleep and wakefulness learning and memory sense and perception and mental disorders; ways in which the brain processes information; computational neuroscience (using computers to analyze brain function). Familiarize students with the workings of the brain.
Statistics in Psychology Application of statistical approaches to psychological research; core concepts in data analysis; basics of probability theory; gathering scientific data in a clinical setting; using experimental sample data to look for significant patterns; using patterns found in data to verify or disprove scientific hypotheses. Ready students to apply statistical analysis to psychological data.
Social and Personality Psychology The identity of a person as an individual versus identity within a social group; ways in which social groups shape people’s thoughts attitudes and actions; identities and behaviors of individuals in relation to their groups and societies; pressures of influence and conformity. Give understanding of the ways in which social groups help mold a person’s identity.
Abnormal Psychology Identifying and classifying various forms of psychopathology (mental illness) in relation to healthy psychology; theoretical models of psychopathological etiology (origins of mental illness); current research on analysis and clinical treatment of mental illnesses. Enable students to recognize and analyze cases of psychological illness.
Drugs and Human Behavior Influence of different types of drugs on behavior and thought; pharmacokinetics (what the body does to a drug) and pharmacodynamics (what a drug does to the body); effects of various drugs on short-term and long-term timescales; uses of drugs in a psychology clinic and common forms of drug abuse. Equip with an understanding of various classes of drugs both beneficial and widely abused.
Developmental Psychology Biological and psychological development over the course of an individual’s life from infancy to childhood to adulthood to old age; ways in which genetics can influence brain growth and psychology; effects of nutrition social feedback and aging on psychological traits throughout an individual’s life. Present a high-level view of psychological changes that can occur over a person’s lifetime.
Health Exercise and Psychology Interactions among behavior psychology stress health illness and pain; ways of preventing patients from engaging in unhealthy behavior patterns and of motivating them to make healthier choices; adapting clinical psychological treatments to patients who are acutely or chronically ill. Prepare students to treat health issues from a psychological viewpoint.
Psychology of Gender and Sexuality Development of sexuality in relation to an individual’s biology and psychology; differences in gender and sexual orientation; physical and socially reinforced conventions about sex and gender; varieties of sexual behaviors; sex-related emotional bonding; counseling victims of sexual assault in a clinical setting. Offer a scientific perspective on sex sexuality and gender.

Certifications and Licensing

Clinical psychologists are generally licensed at the state level. They are required to undergo exams that assess their knowledge of clinical psychology methods and practices. They are also required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ethical principles that guide professionals in this field. In many states the licensing process includes a thorough background check. The number of externship and internship hours required for licensing in this field varies from state to state.


Job Flexibility

Full-time versus part-time:

Due to the demands of caring for patients the majority of clinical psychologists work full time. Some clinical psychologists working for social services and mental health departments may work part time depending on state and federal funding for their programs.

Work location:

Most clinical psychologists work on-site at hospitals clinics and mental health facilities. However those individuals who specialize in school psychology generally maintain a central office and travel off-site to provide mental health services. Professionals who work in rural areas may also work off-site to provide traveling mental health clinics.
