Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists
Training and Education
What you need:
- A bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or an associated field such as microbiology.
- Most states require that lab technologists seek ongoing training and enroll in continuing education courses and maintain their certification.
What you study:
Medical technologists receive an in-depth education in their subjects. An emphasis on the theory behind the technology differentiates the medical technology curriculum from that of medical lab technicians. Coursework for lab technologists includes:
- General biology
- Microbiology
- Cytology and histology
- Anatomy and physiology
- Chemistry
- Statistics
- Laboratory science
What courses you’ll take
Below are examples of courses that you’ll likely take as a student preparing for a career in the medical and clinical laboratory technologist field.
Course | Studies | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Medical Laboratory Science | Organization and operation of the health care system and of an individual clinical laboratory; basics of laboratory procedures equipment safety quality control ethics and professional conduct; academic pathways toward certification and accreditation in the clinical laboratory field. | Familiarize students with the clinical laboratory environment and its roles in health care. |
Clinical Chemistry | Chemical principles procedures instruments and data analysis methods as applied in a clinical setting; preparation performance and analysis of the results of chemical tests; chemicals used by the human body including proteins carbohydrates electrolytes lipids (fats) vitamins and enzymes. | Provide a foundational understanding of biochemistry and of chemical analysis as used in a medical lab. |
Immunohematology | Composition of blood under normal and abnormal conditions; coagulation (blood clotting); antibodies and antigens (chemicals that bind to and neutralize harmful substances in the bloodstream); blood collection storage and preservation; blood types; techniques for detecting compatibility between a blood donor and a recipient. | Prepare students to collect and analyze blood and to assist in blood transfusions. |
Urinalysis and Body Fluids | Anatomy and physiology (function) of human kidneys; gathering samples of urine and other bodily fluids including cerebrospinal fluid; analyzing fluid samples via physical chemical and microscopic means; current technologies used in automated and semi-automated fluid analysis. | Ready students to gather samples of body fluids and to assess them via various means. |
Medical Microbiology | Morphology (structure) and physiology (function) of various kinds of microorganisms; collecting and assessing specimens of pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes; testing patients for susceptibility to specific microbes; lab equipment and procedures used in microbe processing. | Give an understanding of harmful microbes and of the ways they interact with the human body. |
Parasitology and Mycology | Taxonomy (classification) and pathogenesis (disease-causing mechanisms) of fungi and parasites that live in human hosts; use of lab instrumentation and techniques from other classes in the collection and analysis of fungi and parasites. | Enable students to recognize and assess fungi and parasites found in humans. |

Certifications and Licensing
Although not every state requires licensing and certification for medical laboratory technologists many employers require it. Specialists who have a keen interest in a particular aspect of the field often choose to earn certification in these roles. A radiologic technologist for example specializes in processing and analyzing x-ray images.
Job Flexibility
Full-time versus part-time:
Most medical laboratory technologists work fixed full-time shifts although some smaller independent clinics and medical offices offer part-time positions. Most work is on-site. Technologists may make rounds within the facility especially if they specialize in operating portable imaging and diagnostic equipment but they work within a single complex.
