Job Responsibilities & Duties

Depending you your experience and education, you can enter the human resources arena at various levels. A human resources coordinator is directly involved in recruitment, job fairs and administration of the HRIS system. Overall, their job is to support the department policies, goals and standards. A human resources generalist assists with the implementation of human resources programs, acts as an employee advocate, and assists in the development of compensation plans and the performance appraisal processes. A human resources director in a small business usually runs the whole HR show, including meeting directly with employees. In a larger business, the day-to-day details of HR are handled by the department heads who meet regularly with the HR director who has the ultimate responsibility of ensuring the delivery of a consistent message to employees.

Education & Training

Many HR coordinators have bachelor’s degrees, but it’s often not an absolute requirement. Experience counts. Entry into a large business as an HR coordinator is highly sought after. As you prepare your resume, emphasize your experience as well as your education. Most HR generalist positions require a bachelor’s degree in human resources management or a related field. Many of these positions are filled from within based on the employee’s experience and performance. HR Directors are required to have a bachelor’s degree, and many employers require a master’s degree in HR management, labor relations or a related field.
