Many people are probably going in with undergraduate degrees and at least a couple years of experience. When selling yourself, focus on aspects that go against the crowd. If you have a master’s degree or other certifications relevant to the field, then focus on those instead of your undergraduate studies. If you worked in HR in the past, discuss what you specialized in. Did you mostly focus on ensuring all employees got the benefits they deserved? Did you mostly work on disciplinary actions? Specializing in a specific area will help the interviewer understand where you are coming from and see if you can handle the responsibilities of this job.

Show You Know Something About the Company: One of the worst things you can ask in an interview is, “So what exactly does this company do?” You should already have a basic familiarity with the organization. This includes knowing what products or services the business offers as well as who the key players are. If the company has made any significant accomplishments recently, then mention that. You do not have to be an expert about the organization already, but it can help tremendously if you can tailor your answers to what the company needs or wants.

By knowing what the company does, you should be able to use your experience in the field to point to things that can be done differently or improved upon. Point to Real Situations: When a hiring manager asks you if you are a good leader, you do not want to respond with either “Yes” or “No.” You should be able to point to a time in your past work experience when you exemplified the traits of a leader.
