Almost Half of Surveyed Employers Prefer a Half-Page Cover Letter

In the 2010 Orange County Resume Survey*, 46.5 percent of respondents asked how long a cover letter should be expressed a preference for half a page. “The shorter the better” was the response of 23.8 percent of respondents. A full page is the preference of about 19 percent, while 10.7 percent had no preference. Certainly cover letters (except in some professions like academia) should not be more than a page. In this age of information overload and short attention spans, half a page is a good goal to strive for, but don’t fret if your letter is a bit longer than that.
