Criminal Background? You Must Be Honest in the Job Search

In the 2010 Orange County Resume Survey*, 98 percent of all survey participants said that applicants with a criminal history must be honest about the situation to prevent HR from finding the issues on a background check later.
  • 56 percent suggested to write explanation on the RESUME.
  • 15 percent suggested to write an explanation on the APPLICATION
  • 9 percent suggested to wait until the INTERVIEW to explain
  • 6 percent suggested to write an explanation on the COVER LETTER
The remainder either had no response or suggested job-seekers go into specific fields like ‘”auto mechanic” or “own your own business.”
