Do’s and Don’ts for Your Resume

  • DO keep your resume an appropriate length. An overly long resume results in your most important details getting lost among irrelevant information. For each piece of information in your resume, ask yourself if it answers the needs of the job you want. Keep your phrases and bullet points short and crisp, with your summary two to three lines long, your skills section featuring around 10 top skills, and your work experience section limited to the last 10 years of jobs. It should all add up to two pages, at most.
  • DO use action verbs. In the purchasing industry, you’ll want to emphasize a proactive, take-charge attitude, and a sure-fire way to do so is by using action verbs to describe your work achievements. Avoid wishy-washy phrases like “Tasked with,” and use energetic words like managed, oversaw, executed and created. For example: “Created and maintained all category SKUs and visual line lists for specific concepts.”
  • DO highlight accomplishments rather than standard duties. Which work experience makes more of an impact on a hiring manager: “Maintained flow calendars with key milestones” or “Created library of product photos, presentation boards and product information needs”? While both experiences are solid, the latter shows how you’ve taken charge of a project and succeeded. Emphasize these kinds of achievements in your summary and work history sections.
  • DON’T forget to include the right keywords. Employers often use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to review resumes, giving them a “pass” or “fail” based on keywords.
