How to Write the Perfect Resume: Chronological

As you seek for the perfect job, your resume becomes one of the most important tools in your arsenal. With a perfect resume in the correct chronological order, you can catch the eye of the right people within the first 30 seconds of them reading.

The order of your resume is very important. The following ten tips can help you write the perfect resume in chronological order.

1. Identification Information

The first thing you want the employer to have is your identification information, including your name, address, phone number and email address so they can contact you quickly if they want to interview you. Never use an email address that is inappropriate, but always keep it professional.

2. Focal Point of the Resume

This is the section that identifies exactly what job you are searching for and what your best-selling points are.

3. Highlight Your Key Accomplishments

Once your resume has a focal point, you can identify which key achievements and accomplishments you want to add. These should summarize your best work.

4. Education

If you are a recent college grad, the education section should come next, but if you have experience working full-time, this should come after the experience. Include the school, the degree, your major or minor and any awards of honors you received.

5. Professional Experience

Include your job title, the company name, the span of dates that you were employed and any large achievements you had during that time.

6. Interests and Affiliations

You can choose to add this section or remove it depending on how much space you have. Include interests or activities that don't spark controversy and any memberships you have with professional organizations.

7. References

Never include your reference information on your resume, but only that you can provide them upon request.

8. Check Margins and Fonts

Use a simple font in a 12-point size, and keep your margins at one inch. Use bulleted lists as often as possible to keep the information user-friendly.

9. Proofread Your Resume

Once you've created your resume, it's time to proofread again and again until it is perfect. Ask another friend or family member to read through and look for mistakes.

10. Submit Your Resume

While you may want to keep a couple of copies of your resume on heavy resume paper, it's likely that your potential employer will ask you to submit it online. Be prepared for either situation whenever you can be.

Go the Extra Mile

Your resume is one of the most important parts of getting a job, and going the extra mile can mean getting the job or losing out to your competition. Always list information in the order that the reader will find most important, and choose a sharp focus for information on your perfect resume. Avoid using the word "responsibilities" and remove any unnecessary clutter from your document before submitting it. Concrete, strong verbs should start every point of your resume, and your skills section should highlight the assets you offer that are most relevant to the job you are applying for.
