Top 4 characteristics of a best-in-class copywriter resume

  1. Summary As a copywriter, it’s not enough to say that you created some impressive copy. Give an example of how you achieved results with your work, and the vital part you’ve played in your organization’s success.
  2. Skills Tailor your copywriter resume to the job description by pinpointing the skills the recruiter is looking for, and including them. Creativity, a strong work ethic, persuasive abilities, an eye for detail and research abilities are some of the crucial traits you can feature.
  3. Work history Highlight accomplishments most relevant to a copywriter’s profile, and use numbers to demonstrate how these accomplishments contribute to an organization’s success. For example: “Crafted message guidelines and framework for brand content which increased user engagement by 44% in 60 days.”
  4. Education In addition to university degrees, make note of any programs or additional training you’ve had in communications, journalism, advertising, creative writing or marketing.

Do’s and don’ts for your resume

  • Follow the employer’s instructions If the job advertisement provides specific instructions for organizing or submitting your resume, follow them. Since this is a content position, chances are you will be requested to provide examples of writing work — consider adding a separate “credits” section to your resume where you can provide links to your copy.
  • Proofread your resume Spelling mistakes and errors in punctuation, grammar and syntax will undermine a copywriter more than anything else. Pay close attention to detail, and take ample time to proofread your resume and spell-check it. If possible, find a colleague or connection with excellent grammar skills to proofread your resume.
  • Make your resume compliant with ATS Hiring managers are using application tracking systems (ATS) to filter out unsuitable resumes and make their job easier. To make your resume ATS-compliant, read the job description thoroughly for keywords that apply to your skills and experiences, such as “design review,” “story writing,” “social media” and “campaign management.” Use these keywords in your own resume; they will highlight your abilities and enable your document to pass an ATS scan. etc.
  • Don’t reveal confidential information Do not commit the mistake of revealing sensitive information in your resume. Details regarding confidential projects you’ve worked on shouldn’t be mentioned. Also be careful not to reveal details about salary or personal information regarding political affiliations, religious views or marital status.
  • Don’t oversell yourself You might be tempted to exaggerate your experience or ability to satisfy one recruiter’s requirements, but don’t lie about your skills, or include work samples that are not your own. If you feel like you fall short in certain qualifications, make up for it in your summary section by describing other attributes that will allow you to be successful in the job, and pointing out similar functions from previous jobs. False information can put a full stop to your copywriting career.
  • Don’t create a lengthy resume While people with extensive experience will have a longer resume than other candidates, it’s a good rule of thumb to keep your resume within one page. Instead of detailing all your achievements, focus more on relevant accomplishments. Remember that most recruiters only take a few seconds to read a resume, so restrict yourself to only your most essential skills and qualifications.
