BUILD YOUR RESUME

What Does a Stylist Do?

Before you create your stylist resume, you should know exactly what sort of stylist job your looking for. Stylists perform a wide array of tasks. Some style hair exclusively, and some do makeup. Some create clothing or help customers find what clothing fits their style, comfort level, and body shape. Some do a combination of all three. There are many levels of stylist jobs; many work in salons serving the general public, but many others work in Hollywood, styling stars for the red carpet or contributing to movie and TV show costumes and makeup designs. Knowing what you’re good at will make you a better stylist, and that can help you write a better stylist resume.

How Do You Become a Stylist?

Most stylists take some sort of classes, generally in a nine-month to two-year program at a beauty or special effects school. Some go to a traditional four-year college that helps them specialize in theatrical makeup or television production. Most stylists go to a traditional beauty school for a few months or a year and then start serving clients. Many stylists can do hair, makeup, nails, and skincare, but most tend to specialize in just one or two practices. Some sort of practical education is usually required; in the traditional beauty school setting, volunteers go in to get styled by the students for a very low price or for free. This helps the stylist learn to relax, get better at her craft, and relate to her customers.

What Goes on a Stylist Resume?

Writing a stylist resume can seem tricky at first; after all, your work is so hands-on that it’s really hard to put your talents down on paper. Many stylists have a portfolio for just that reason; prospective employers can see how her work looks, what she’s capable of, and if her personal style fits with that of the salon. However, any stylist resume should contain her educational background, her experience, including the length of time she worked at a particular salon, and if she has any specializations or required certifications. Many states require stylists to have particular health and safety certifications, and that should go on a stylist resume as well. If you’re interested in writing a stylist resume, the first thing to do is decide what discipline to specialize in, and write your resume to reflect your education and experience, making you the most capable stylist possible.
