Job DescriptionCaregiver companions provide basic care to individuals who cannot care for themselves. Most often this involves helping children or the elderly, but caregivers can work with people of all ages. Services may be required for long-term care or for short-term recovery. Taking vital signs and assisting with medication are part of the caregiver’s responsibilities. The duties of a caregiver companion are many, and vary based on the needs of the individual being cared for. They include assistance getting to the restroom, bathing, dressing and cooking. The companionship portion of the job is as important as the physical assistance. Often the elderly look forward to caregiver visits as a time of social interaction, and in some cases, a time to get out of the house. Although the level of housekeeping varies from client to client, some housekeeping, like dusting, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms and kitchen areas are usually part of the job. Caregivers are often an important link between the family members and the medical team of the client. Caregiver companions work in various settings, like a client’s home, a residential intellectual and developmental disability facility, or retirement and assisted living for the elderly.
Education & Training RequirementsMost caregivers have a high school diploma. Training is usually conducted on the job by seasoned staff or nurses and includes how to cook for special dietary needs, safety precautions and proper emergency response. Some states require more formal training, and certification is always required if the agency receives payments from Medicare or Medicaid. Salary Range Wages for caregivers are generally paid hourly, with the mean currently at $10.01 per hour. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, caregiver jobs are expected to grow 69% – a much faster rate of growth than most jobs, but in line with the large numbers of aging baby boomers. As you prepare your resume, be sure to include any elder care classes you may have already taken. Also appropriate for this industry is your personal experience with an elderly grandparent, other relative or a neighbor that you assisted in some way. Companion Caregiver Resume Questions
Create the following five sections in the order given: header, summary statement, skills, experience, and professional courses and certifications. While other professions may include an education section, courses and certifications are more appropriate for caregivers who use their knowledge and skills to help others. Hiring managers want to see evidence of your on-the-job and professional training, particularly when you’re applying for a position in a certified facility. In most caregiver positions, soft skills are as critical as hard skills. Companionship and encouragement, for example, affect clients’ quality of life as much as transportation and health records management. Showcase your soft and hard skills in a bullet point list in your skills section. Provide more detail on your soft skills in the experience section of your resume. Perhaps you “read and sang to clients, cooked light meals, and provided daytime companionship” while working as a caregiver in a retirement facility.
If the job description requests knowledge of a specific software, include it in your skills section so the hiring manager can easily see it. Mention other software in your experience section, if relevant to the advertised position. Create a bullet point that ties the software to a responsibility, for example, “Accessed Mi-Co database software daily to maintain clients’ health records.” Also, if you’ve taken software workshops or received certification from recognized institutions, include this information in your professional courses and certifications section.

For each position, provide your job title, dates of employment, the name of your place of employment, and its city and state location.
Beneath the introductory information, provide a bullet point list of your top skills, responsibilities, and successes while in the position. You want to give the hiring manager a clear idea of your daily responsibilities and the areas in which you excel. Include skills or keywords that appear in the job description to further pitch yourself as a great fit for the job.
Include 5â€“8 bullet points with each job. Lists of more than eight items are too long for hiring managers to easily scan. Be strategic as you compose your bullet points: Include information relevant to the advertised position, and use action verbs to keep the hiring manager’s attention.
