5 Common Assistant Product Manager Interview Questions & Answers

1. As an assistant product manager, you will be required to work with the product during every stage of development? What stage do you feel is the most crucial?

It’s obviously difficult to choose one phase, because it is important to spend time in all phases of the product life. From my experience, the promotion period of the product is vital to its success. During my last job, our product development team spent a lot of time and money researching and developing an amazing product. Everyone at the company loved the product and it was a really great concept and idea. Unfortunately, it did not perform well when it was launched. I believe this was because the same effort was not put into the promotion of the product. No matter how great the product is, if it isn’t promoted well, it probably will not sell.

2. This job requires a lot of research. Can you give us an example from your previous work where your research skills were beneficial?

When I worked as a marketing assistant, I was in charge of reviewing the weekly metrics and analytics for our promotions. I noticed that one of our products was not performing well in a specific region, but it was doing amazing everywhere else. When I did more research, I realized the demographics in that region were different and they probably were not responding to our advertising. Once we recognized this, we were able to send targeted ads to the area that was struggling. Soon their sales increased.

3. You will be required to work with different departments including sales and product development. What qualities do you possess that will help you in this part of your job?

I have strong people skills and love to work with others. One of my biggest strengths is an ability to get along with several different personalities. I know this will help me while I interact with different organizations in the company. In addition, I am very organized. I manage my time well, so I can easily juggle the responsibilities that are given to me from different departments.

4. Are you confident sharing ideas for new products?

Yes. This is one of the reasons I want to work as an assistant product manager. I am passionate about creating products that people love. When I worked at my last job, I suggested an improvement for the product we already made. Developing this improvement was costly, but it had the potential to make the product much more user friendly and appealing to the consumer. After a lot of research, my company decided to move forward with my suggestion. The updated product boosted sales by more than 15 percent.

5. Some of your job will require reports and paperwork. Can you perform this accurately and on time?

At my last job, reports were a priority because without them, we could not experience the success we wanted. The same is true for any company, and I know that when I am working here, as an assistant product manager, reports and paperwork need to be completed properly. I am detailed oriented and have the ability to complete the reports on time. I appreciate their value and want to invest the time to get them done right so I can perform my job better.
