How to Write the Perfect Resume Skill Section

The perfect resume in today's digital setting for hiring and job searching uses an effective skill section to get noticed. Make your skills stand out with pertinent keywords that a job applicant tracking system is looking for in each resume to give yourself an edge.

1. Keywords – Learn What Words Are Needed for This Section

The most effective resumes are the ones that understand the concept of job keywords. Today, more resumes are being reviewed by computer systems before a real person. If you want your resume to advance to the next step of the review process, you've got to include specific keywords related to the job posting. Find out what the keywords may be by doing a careful read of the job advertisement.

2. Industry-Specific Skills – Find Out What Your Strengths Are

Next, brainstorm the skills you are equipped with. Start with your industry-specific capabilities. When you begin writing your skill section for your perfect resume, place these detailed job skills first in your listing. These skills could include industry software you're capable of using, machinery you've worked with, knowledge of your field's safety standards or regulations and other valuable details from your line of work.

3. Soft Skills – Detail Your Most Valuable Attributes

You should also include another set of skills to finish this section of your resume, soft skills. Soft skills are attributes that candidates could have for any type of work or industry. Make sure you have read over the job posting to see what soft skills are needed for the job before listing your own positive qualities.

4. Format – Use Short Phrasing for This Section

This part of your resume doesn't have to be written in paragraph format or even using full sentences. It's more effective to simply make a bulleted list of your top skills and areas of expertise. Many candidates work to set this section up in a series of three columns to make it easier for the reader to digest the information. For each detail, write a few words to get the point across.

5. Amount – Avoid Going Overboard With Your Talents

The last thing to keep in mind with your skill section is to make it brief. This part can be more powerful if you limit your list of skills to only the most important ones for the job you're trying to secure. Go with at least three to four skills per column. More than eight in each column may be too much.

Go the Extra Mile

To increase your chances of getting a hiring manager to notice your resume, look at your document to see how you can improve the writing. Go through your summary statement and eliminate any pronouns to make it more powerful. Review your work history and omit unnecessary verbiage. If you're not sure what to take out, try removing articles, like the words "a," "an" and "the" to reduce the amount of excess. Cutting out some words can help your resume get closer to the standard length of one page. While a two-page resume is not a deal breaker, the perfect resume is typically one page and packs a powerful punch when the reader has all of the information in one spot.
