Dear Ms. Caruso,

Collecting on past-due accounts is not an easy job. A successful collector not only has to have the persistence to recover a client’s money, but also the patience and understanding to effectively deal with each debtor’s individual situation and come to a resolution. It is vital to maintain a polite but firm disposition during a collection conversation. I feel that I have the temperament and the experience to be an effective collector for your agency.

During my previous employment as a collector, I resolved hundreds of accounts. On several occasions, when debtors stated they were unable to pay, I negotiated a mutually-agreeable payment plan to help bring the accounts current. I have found that many people, even when they are initially upset about the collection, are willing to pay their debts when arrangements are made to accommodate their budgets.

My first job was conducting market research telephone surveys for an agency with several major clients. This work not only honed my telephone and speaking skills, but was similar to account collection in many respects. It is difficult to get people to stay on the phone for market surveys, and it takes some skill to convince them to do so. This experience was valuable in my subsequent job as a collector.

My five years of experience as a collector and previous two years as a market research representative have given me the necessary skills and experience to be an efficient collector for your company. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future to set up an interview.

What to Include in a Collector Cover Letter

It is important that you not use your cover letter to simply list the job experience already outlined in your resume; this defeats the purpose of the cover letter. Instead, you want to use it as an opportunity to engage the reviewer on a personal level and show specifically how your skills and experience qualify you for the desired position, as you can see from the free collector cover letter sample above. It’s also best to limit your cover letter to four paragraphs and mirror the language used in the job description.

Industry Specific Skills to Include

While the job description and your skills should dictate the format of your cover letter, it’s a good idea to use the free collector cover letter sample above to highlight skills like the following.

● Listening: Collectors must pay close attention to what debtors say about their particular financial situation.
● Speaking: Collectors must speak clearly to debtors and explain their available options for repayment.
● Negotiating: The collector must reconcile the differences between debtor and creditor and find a solution that is acceptable to both parties.
● Organization: A collector must be organized to keep track of who has already been contacted and when contact was made.
