1. A large part of being a claims examiner involves consulting with legal representatives. What do you plan on doing to properly prepare for these meetings?

In any meeting, having enough information is the key to success. In order to prepare to consult with legal representatives, I would gather as much information as I can about the claim and determine which of it is relevant to the situation. I would then prepare a report that precisely describes how the claim developed and its current status in order for all legal parties to be prepared to either litigate or resolve the claim.

2. Describe a situation where you had to negotiate with a claimant and how you handled the process.

I realize that as a claims examiner, knowing how to employ proper negotiating skills is critically important. In one situation, a claimant was not cooperating and would not accept any offer I had. Finally I had to resort to issuing an ultimatum and told the claimant that she was at risk for losing any type of benefit. While she threatened litigation, I assured her that what she was receiving was fair, and she was eventually appeased.

3. What do you do to ensure all photographs and statements are accurately examined?

In order to make sure this happens, I never let bias or emotions get in the way. I know that part of being in the insurance industry involves being objective, and always ensure that all statements, photographs, and documentation are collected and viewed in a timely manner. I then make sure that after all these factors have been examined, a complete statement is provided back to the claimant and all other parties involved with the claim.

4. Part of being an examiner involves going to different sites, often outside of business hours. How do you plan to manage your responsibilities as well as your personal life?

I never want my personal life to get in the way of my work life. That being said, I intend to make sure that when I am on the clock, I am completely focused on what needs to be done. I also intend to be as efficient as possible during my workday, even if it is outside of regular business hours, so that I am able to dedicate enough time to my personal life. Overall I believe doing this will make me a better employee, as well as a happier, more satisfied person in general.

5. Evaluating damages can be very subjective. How do you plan on maintaining consistency?

As a claims analyst, I know how important it is to verify sources in order to come up with fair and proper pricing for things. Although this can be time consuming, I believe that it is one of the most important parts of maintaining consistency. Not only does it ensure that policies are paid out fairly, but it also helps the insurance company and its clients maintain beneficial relationships that are advantageous for both parties.

6. You will often deal with confidential information in this position. What will you do to remain professional?

I recognize how critical it is to keep confidential information confidential. Due to this, I will never give claimants any other information besides what they need. However, I will always be available to answer questions and help claimants understand why a certain decision was reached.
