HSE Officer Resume Questions
Hiring managers spend an average of six seconds scanning each resume. It is therefore a good idea to use a standard format for structuring your document. Start by putting your name and contact information at the top. Follow this with sections titled summary, highlights, work experience, and education. You can write a short paragraph for the summary statement, but the other sections should have bullet points. Create bold headers to delineate each section and make sure all the bulleted lists line up properly.
Except for a handful of instances, the objective statement is no longer suitable on a resume, and you should write a professional summary instead. If you are applying for your first job, are changing careers, or are returning to the work force after a long absence, the objective statement may still be useful and appropriate.
To craft a strong professional statement, think about what the job description is seeking and fit your strengths into those needs. For example, if the company wants an OSHA trained HSE officer, and you have that training, begin your statement with, “OSHA trained officer with construction site experience.” Mention a couple of soft skills and hard skills as well.
As you can see from our HSE officer resume sample, present your work experience in reverse chronological order. Start with your current job and put relevant employment for the past 15-20 years. Include the name and location of the employer, the years you worked there, and a bulleted list of accomplishments and responsibilities.
Don’t forget to mention numbers when possible. If you created an equipment placement diagram that reduced on-site accidents by 21%, write those numbers down. Choose powerful verbs that show improvement and progress.
Generally, resumes should be one page long. There are exceptions, however. If you have 15-20 years’ work experience that shows important information, you may extend another page. Also, if you have management responsibilities and experience, that can merit an additional page.
Keep your resume short and to the point by whittling away unnecessary information. Only include seven to eight of your strongest skills and write five to eight bullet points for each previous job.
Employers who receive a high volume of job applicants often use an Applicant Tracking System, a computer program that scans resumes for desired keywords. Hiring managers only look at the highest ranked resumes. To get your resume into the hands of a human, use a simple template with no graphics or logos. They can confuse the program.
