Patient and Newborn Care Nursing Administration Team Leadership
Patient and Newborn Care l Comfort and coach mothers throughout birthing process from labor to delivery; monitor contractions and assist patient with breathing techniques. l Identify and manage life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients to ensure welfare of mother and child; monitor and record patient vital signs, and read and track fetal monitors. l Provide immediate care for newborn, including documenting weight and length/height, and calculate Apgar scores. Labor and Delivery l Prepare patients for birthing process; ensure patient’s bed is kept dry and clean, and clean up bodily fluids expelled during/after birthing process. l Coordinate with anesthesiologists to administer epidurals; care for patients on Pitocin, MgSO4, and continuous lumbar epidural. l Assist physicians during delivery process; hand doctor delivery instruments while monitoring patients. l Complete periodic cervical examinations of patient’s cervix to monitor progress or lack of dilation. Nursing Administration l Direct daily activities to provide continuous quality nursing care to residents, coordinate patient care, implement procedures and programs, manage workflows, and ensure compliance with established hospital policies and health/safety regulations. l Maintain accurate resident clinical files, patient files and charts, and other departmental/hospital documents; complete employee/resident incident report forms and follow-up investigation forms. l Manage department inventories; audits medications at beginning and end of shift and maintain accountability for controlled substances. l Train and precept new nurses; communicate established procedures and policies; supervise nursing staff and personnel to ensure compliance with standard job requirements.
