City clerks handle elections, as well as provide a line of communication between the public and city or municipality councils. In this era of tight government budgets, the expected job growth for city and municipal clerks is only four percent, or slower than average. If you’re interested in this competitive line of work, it’s particularly important that your resume is head and shoulders above the rest due to the limited numbers of openings.
The two most important sections of a resume for a city clerk position are the work history and education sections. In the education section, emphasize your study of political science or related fields. Your work history should draw attention to any previous government positions held–if you don’t have previous experience, be sure to include volunteer experience at nonprofits or government agencies.
